However, many states have adopted a set of guidelines regarding the practice of massage therapy.

How to Earn Your Massage Therapy Certificate 

It is important to recognize that massage therapy certification and state licensing are two different areas. National certification is upheld by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, aka NCBTMB. However, massage therapy certification requirements are set forth by the city or jurisdiction in which you live and can therefore vary from state to state.

In order for your massage therapy certification to be recognized nationally, you must first complete the following: a minimum of 500 hours of education at an accredited school toward massage therapy degrees, pass the certification exam, and do continuing education. You must also demonstrate a mastery of your skills and uphold stated standards. On the other hand, state guidelines vary and some states don’t even have regulations.

Which National Certification Exam Should You Take?  

The NCBTMB offers two types of massage therapy exams, including the National Certificate Examination for Therapeutic Massage and the National Certificate Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Your chosen area of expertise will dictate which exam you will take to earn your massage therapy certification.

Both exams come with certification. The only difference will be the exam content. The test differs in that the NCETMB includes questions about bodywork. The eligibility requirements for both exams are the same. 

An additional option is the NESL (National Examination for State Licensing) which is supported by states that use NCBTMB exams, but do not require applicants to become certified by NCBTMB. Students who pass the NESL become immediately eligible for a state license and can later apply for national certification by completing the NESL conversion form.
